Vegetable Gardening for Beginners

Welcome! "Vegetable Gardening for Beginners" is your portal to everything you need to know to get started growing your own vibrant, overflowing vegetable garden. Starting a garden can be exciting - but it can also feel a bit overwhelming at first. A happy and productive garden that produces well all season requires a bit of careful planning up front, but take heart! It's all laid out here.

Along the way you will figure out (or decide):

  • Do I want raised beds or an in-ground garden?
  • Which vegetables do I want to grow?
  • How much space is each plant going to need?
  • How many of each vegetable should I plant?
  • Where's the best place to put my vegetable garden, and how much sun does it get?
  • How do I prepare the soil? (Or, what soil should I buy if I'm planting raised beds?)
  • How do I lay out the plan before I plant?

In Vegetable Gardening for Beginners I lay out a clear path through the weeds to help you get your hands in the dirt as soon as possible, without  making the most common mistakes - the same ones I made when I first started.

Vegetable gardening has been the passion of my life 35 years now, and my garden has taught me a lot along the way. So I encourage you to learn from my mistakes, and read through the pages below before you take a spade to your soil (or build your raised bed),

Growing a garden is the best way I know to reconnect to nature, which for many of us has become an increasing challenge in these strange times. Growing a vegetable garden is actually a process of making a relationship, and I have not found anything that is as fulfilling, empowering, centering, and (sometimes) as frustrating as growing a vegetable garden year in and year out.

I am here to serve you, to help you forge that relationship with your own garden and reap its rewards.

And when you are not a beginner anymore, there are tons of articles on this site that can answer all your questions and solve most vegetable gardening problems. (And, if they can't, contact me!)

So let's tap into that springtime energy and jump in! I've broken everything you need to know down into manageable chunks, laid out below in a step-by-step plan to lead you through the process:
